A 12V compressor fridge ends soggy ice and lets you stay out longer. Pick one by what you carry, where it will sit in the vehicle and what will power it.

1Size it by what you carry

Fridges are sold in quarts (1 qt ≈ 0.95 L, so 1 L ≈ 1.06 qt). Before you choose a size, pack one trip’s food and drinks into a box at home and measure it. Then check the fridge’s external dimensions against the space in your cargo area. Leave room around the vents, as the manual specifies.

Volume checkbox length × width × height (in) ÷ 57.75 ≈ quarts

2Single zone or dual zone

Single zone

One compartment set as either a fridge or a freezer. Simpler and usually smaller for the same capacity.

Dual zone

Two compartments at two temperatures, so you get a freezer and a fridge at once. Larger and heavier.

3Compressor vs thermoelectric

Compressor fridges can hold a set temperature, including below freezing, whatever the weather. Thermoelectric coolers can only cool to a certain number of degrees below the air around them. They lose ground on hot days, and their constant draw is often higher. For multi-day trips, look for a compressor.

4Power draw and battery protection

Compare the average draw where the maker publishes it, then size the battery with our fridge power math. If the fridge runs off the vehicle’s starter battery, use its low-voltage cut-off. It switches the fridge off before the battery is too flat to start the engine.

5Mounting and access

Strap the fridge down; a loose 40+ lb box is dangerous under hard braking. A drop-down slide makes a top-opening fridge usable in a tall SUV. Plan where it sits with the rig builder, then compare fridges side by side.

Frequently asked questions

What size 12V fridge do I need?

Pack one trip’s food and drinks into a box, measure it and convert to quarts (cubic inches ÷ 57.75). Then check the fridge’s external dimensions fit your cargo space.

Is a dual-zone fridge worth it?

If you want frozen and chilled food at the same time, yes. If you mainly keep drinks and fresh food cold, a single zone is simpler and smaller.

Can a 12V fridge drain my car battery?

Yes, if it runs with the engine off for long. Use the fridge’s low-voltage cut-off, or run it from a separate battery or power station.
